Second Grade
A. Course Description:
Second Grade builds on language arts skills developed in First Grade, and develops skills in reading, spelling and grammar. We refine student's writing ability, so that it is aesthetically pleasing. We also teach a student to master basic grammar, and using the Progymnasmata, to develop composition skills. Students learn multiplication and division problem-solving skills. The content theme of Second Grade is Ancient Egypt, which anchors our history, Bible, art and geography study.
B. Objectives and Methods:
We use the Spaulding method ("Spell to Write and Read") to refine the student's spelling abilities, and we continue to use dictation to develop listening and analytical thinking skills. We integrate history/geography/Bible/science and literature, so that students learn these subjects in their interrelated contexts and not in isolation. We also continue using the Progymnasmata composition program, to develop writing skills (Fables, Narratives, etc.).
C. Course Goals:
- a student will be able to read and understand literature's plot, main characters and setting;
- a student will be able to write, neatly, in cursive, and spell accurately, the 800 most commonly used words in the English language, per the Wise list;

- English grammar: a student will be able to identify parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions), using Shurley Grammar chants and exercises;
